SAX GORDON

Welcome to my new website!

May 1, 2013
Welcome to my new website and blog!  2013 is shaping up pretty well, things got off to a good start with a trip to Chicago in January with my friend, Italian guitarist Luca Giordano. We did a few nights at Rosa's Lounge and had a ball!  My latest CD "SHOWTIME!" came out in late 2012 and it's been nice to have something new to bring to the fans at these gigs. It's also availablefromwww.bluebeatmusic.com in the USA, www.continental.nl in Europe, and from iTunes.

In February I organized a five-day presentation of Boston Blues & Soul Performers for the Dubai Jazz Festival.  Backed by a fantastic band including drummer Per Hanson, guitarist Mike Williams, and bassist Jesse Williams, I started things off with my own show, then singer Brian Templeton rocked the house followed by the soulful Toni Lynn Washington. Wildman Barrence Whitfield was next and we all performed together on the last night. The hospitality in Dubai was great (I even had a "pillow menu" and an espresso machine in my multi-room hotel suite!) and the audiences were fantastic!

In March I joined the Lluís Coloma Trio for a week at one of my favorite places - the Cafe' Central in Madrid. We sold out just about every night and prepared all-new-original material for a CD we recorded near Barcelona the next week with a full band featuring Mallorcan guitarist Balta Bardoy and a big horn section including my old friends trumpeter David Pastor and rockin' tenor-man Big Dani Perez. This CD is really going to show a different side of my playing, and as I listen back I'm really grateful to Lluís for putting so much work into this, writing music and organizing all the technical things to make it all happen. It was also a pleasure to collaborate on ideas, songs, and horn arrangements, I'm used to doing everything by myself, so this was a new experience and I'm really happy with the result. Not sure when it will be released but I'll let you know..

From Barcelona I flew into Paris and went straight to rehearsals with Big Dez and his band. Then there was the coldest April-in-Paris photo shoot I've ever had to do, but thanks to great keyboard player Damien Cornelis' photography skills we got some great pix (like the one on my "On Tour" page!) The next day we played the very cool Blues Notes festival in the snowy (!) north of France near Rouen and it was a pleasure to meet and hear European Blues Challenge winners Veronica & the Red Wine Serenaders from Italy, and to put on the big show with Big Dez and his horn section and backup singers!  The festival people were great and we ate and drank late into the night, the only problem was that early train I had to catch to get to the next stop!

I made the train! I arrived near the north-west coast of France near Vannes and met organist Raphael Wressnig and drummer Lukas Knofler for Nuit du Blues in Ambon. Once again we met a ton of nice people, had some great food and had fun playing our music for a great audience. It was a pleasure to have guitarist Zeb Heintz, from Zeb & the Blues Machine visit with his cool custom guitar and join us on stage. Zeb was one of the first musicians I collaborated with in Europe, he brought me to the area maybe 15 years ago (I'll have to look that one up..) and he's sounding great!

In May I'm off to the Blues Foundation Blues Awards in Memphis, I've been nominated again in the "Horn" category. It's an honor to be included along with the great Eddie Shaw and I'm lookin forward to relaxing, eating and diggin the show!

There's a lot of cool things happening for me in the summer, including a collaboration with some of my favorite musicians from around the globe that I'm calling "Sax Gordon's International Soul Caravan", featuring guitarist Igor Prado and drummer Yuri Prado from Brazil, and Hammond B-3 organ specialist Raphael Wressnig from Austria. We'll be playing in Europe in late July at the Porretta Soul Festival in Italy among other places..

Stay tuned for more info, and I hope to see you out there!

Hey Sax,
Will you be coming to the Sea Note - Hull, Ma this summer? I want to surprise big Sis again for her birthday. It will be the big 58 this time, not the big 50.
Boy time has flown......
jazz it up!

Hey Bobbie, I don't have anything booked at the Sea Note right now, but send me an e-mail at saxgordon@yahoo.com and maybe we can figure out something for that surprise! Thanks for thinking of me!
