SAX GORDON

Summer's Here!

June 30, 2013

Hey, I’m back! Figured it was time to check in before this crazy summer gets underway. As usual I’ll be traveling and doing a lot of gigs around Europe with different groups, but before getting into that I gotta tell you about a cool recording session I did near Barcelona with the amazing pianist Lluís Coloma and his great trio (Marc Ruiz - drums & Manolo Germán - bass) + Mallorcan guitarist Balta Bardoy and a 5-piece horn section including my pal Dani Perez, who’s got about the biggest tenor tone you’ll hear in that (or any) part of the world, and ace trumpeter David Pastor.

While doing a week at the classy and fun Café Central in Madrid back in March, we developed and rehearsed brand new material, then took over the historic Nova Jazz Cava Club in Terrassa near Barcelona for a private recording session. The all-original music has influences of Blues, Jazz, Boogie-Woogie, Gospel, Catalonian and Latin music. Not quite sure how to describe it but it rocks, it’s soulful, and I’m glad and honored that I had the chance to collaborate with Lluís and these great musicians. We’re working on mixes now, and I’ll let you know when it get’s released.

Next week the summer fun in Europe starts in Austria with my frequent collaborator Raphael Wressnig and his “Soul Gift Revue”.  Raphael Wressnig & Alex Schultz’s “Soul Gift” CD has received great reviews and so many requests to bring it to the stage that we’re doing just that! While guitarist Alex Schultz and singer Tad Robinson are engaged elsewhere, we’ve brought in frequent collaborator Enrico Crivellaro on guitar and we’ll leave the singing up to Chicago Blues star Deitra Farr who sounds so beautiful on the CD.

Our first stop is July 4th at Rudi Kolleritsch’s gorgeous place in Mureck, Austria. A schnapps brewery, a farm, a garden, it’s a perfect place to enjoy a night of great wine, food, schnapps and music. Don’t forget to get a bottle to take home, I always do!

Next stop is July 5th at the venerable Gaildorf Blues Fest in Germany. A bi-yearly festival, this is a real highlight on the European festival circuit, with great bands, great friends and a great audience. My first appearance there was many years ago with a huge band organized by Otis Grand, but the memory that stays with me was watching wildman pianist Al Copley totally DESTROY the place with just a drummer! Just 2 guys practically leveled the place! Eventually I joined Al for a lot of gigs around Europe and we did our share of damage too! Since then I’ve also appeared at the Gaildorf Festival with James Harman, Junior Watson, and the wonderful and soulful Boston-based singer Toni Lynn Washington.

July 6th finds us at the Vache De Blues festival in Villerupt, northern France near Luxembourg. I’ll also be conducting a sax masterclass in the early afternoon on the 7th, and you know, it just so happens that my good friends - the Igor Prado Band from Brazil will be there backing up West-Coast singer Lynnwood Slim that night. Igor will have his his own rising sax star with him, Denilson Martens, who I’ve had the pleasure of working with in Brazil, where we also recorded a few songs for his upcoming CD. Do you think they’ll let me sit in for a few songs if I promise to learn the horn parts and not mess up too bad?

(Denilson Martens & Gordon in Brazil)

I couldn’t help but take advantage of having all these great musical friends around in Europe in July. I organized my own revue for a tour in Italy...

I’ll already be working in the house band at the famous Porretta Soul Festival with the great band-leader/musical-director Paul Brown and his Nashville-based band backing Soul stars Latimore, Mitty Collier, David Hudson, and Bobby Rush (Paul produced Bobby’s latest critically-acclaimed CD “Down In Louisiana”) starting on July 19th, then on the 21st organist Raphael Wressnig, guitarist Igor Prado, and drummer Yuri Prado will join me for the debut of “Sax Gordon’s International Soul Caravan”.

We’ll continue doing concerts around the Bologna, Italy area, then head south to the San Severino Blues Festival (July 26) and finish at the Baia Domizia Blues Fest on July 27th.

I heard a rumor that my old buddy Junior Watson was gonna be performing at the Baia Domizia Fest with the Rome-based Jump Blues group the Red Wagons on the 28th. Me and Junior both played on the Red Wagons’ most recent CD and I just happen to have that night off..hmmmm, I wonder if they’d let me sit in? Maybe if I buy em a bottle of wine...

Looking farther ahead, Raphael’s Soul Gift Revue will hit the road again in September in Belgium and Switzerland...October I’ll be back down in beautiful Brazil with Igor Prado and the band...and there’s more recordings coming up too. Remember you can always find my schedule or contact me through this website, and don’t forget you can always get my new CD “SHOWTIME!” from www.continental.nl in Europe, www.bluebeatmusic.com in the USA, and iTunes everywhere.

Hope to see you out there!

Go Back

See you soon !

Hey Gordon, any plans to visit Australia soon?

Hey David, no plans to visit Australia soon, but I'd love to go there again. Last trip I did there was with the great Solomon Burke, I think it was the only tour he did in Australia. We played in Sydney, the Prince Band Room in Melbourne, and at the big festival in Byron Bay where I got in trouble for pulling girls onstage (oops!).. Would love to come back. I'll be updating my schedule soon, check back to see where I WILL be playing..
